Valley Wilds Ranger Article: "Campfire Cooking: Simple Desserts Edition" by Ranger Seth Eddings

Marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers on a wooden board—ingredients for s'mores.
S'MORES PIE

When it’s time to dine on s’mores at the end of the night around a campfire, sometimes it can be hard to find a proper stick to use, or we discover our metal s’more sticks had not been cleaned since last year's camping trip. Even worse, there may not enough sticks to go around!

Worry not! There is a way to roast marshmallows—without sticks—for delicious s’mores. A humble cast-iron skillet can save the camping trip.

You will need:

  • One box of graham crackers
  • One bag of marshmellows
  • Hershey's chocolate bar – broken into pieces
  • One Cast-iron Skillet
  • Aluminum foil
  • Spatula

How to Cook:

  1. Place the cast iron skillet on top of the grill above the campfire. (Most campsites have this).
  2. Cover the entire bottom of the skillet with whole graham crackers.
  3. Break up the chocolate into smaller pieces.
  4. Put all the marshmallows and broken up chocolate into the skillet on top of the graham crackers.
  5. Top with remaining graham crackers.
  6. Cover skillet with aluminum foil.
  7. Cook for about 5 minutes.
  8. Carefully remove skillet from the fire and remove foil
  9. Enjoy a gooey s’mores pie!

This is easy to make at home in the oven or on the BBQ if you are missing the sweet taste of camping in the fall.
